Ocular Surface Surgery

Objectives: Upon completion of this conference the resident/student should have an understanding of surgery of the ocular surface and should be able to:

  • Review the principles of corneal and conjunctival wound healing
  • Review the mechanisms by which the ocular surface is maintained and responds to injury
  • Describe the indications, preoperative evaluation, surgical technique and potential complications of
    • conjunctival biopsy
    • tarsorrhaphy
    • pterygium excision
    • conjunctival transplantation
    • limbal transplantation
    • conjunctival flap creation
    • mucous membrane grafting
    • superficial keratectomy and corneal biopsy
    • management of descemetocele, corneal perforation and corneal edema
    • corneal tattooing
