Drs. Mathur and Agarwal will present, "Highlights on How a Community Based Humanitarian Effort of Reaching out to the Needlessly Blind Provides a Platform for Research in Eye Care," at the UPMC Eye Center Grand Rounds on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 7am in BST S 120.
Dr. Umang Mathur is the Medical Director at the Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH), New Delhi, India.SCEH is an institution that has been delivering eye care to the community for over ninety years. Following his residency in Ophthalmology, Dr. Mathur did his fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment from the LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. He received further training in corneal surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Wilmer Eye Institute, USA. Dr. Mathur has several publications in peer reviewed journals and participates actively in national and international conferences. He has been associated with SCEH for over fourteen years and has been involved in developing and implementing quality and sustainable eye care systems at this institution. Besides his cornea, cataract, and Lasik surgery practice, he has interest in community ophthalmology. He is an accomplished surgeon and has the former President of India, among his patients. He is the president and on the board of Combat Blindness Foundation-India. He is actively involved in eye banking. He is the founding director of the Eye Bank at Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, which is today among the leading eye banks in north India. Dr. Mathur trained over 200 long term and short term fellows in anterior segment pathology and cataract surgery.
Dr. Manisha Agarwal is Head of Department of Vitreo-retina services at the Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, New Delhi. She trained in Vitreoretina at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai and was awarded the best vitreoretina fellow award. She received the Indian Society for prevention of blindness Endowment award and the Spirit of Humanity award for the work done in Diabetic retinopathy. She has special interest in clinical research and leads the Research initiative at Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital.
